Work motivation and workload

Science is an area in which a high level of motivation and passion for the work can be expected. Myths abound regarding the work ethic in science, which is not only seen as positive (Weber 1919). Working conditions, structural conditions in science and in research institutions, as well as the work culture in the narrower working environment, can have an influence on motivation. Particularly relevant from an occupational psychology perspective are work loads, so-called stressors. Particularly in the case of high intrinsic motivation and the resulting increased work input, these can lead to excessive demands in the long term, even to the point of “burnout”. A lack of motivation and increasing stress, in turn, increase the risks to research quality.
